Dr. Vivek Sharma is a Herpetologist and Ecologist whose work primarily focuses on Frogs, Snakes and Avian biodiversity, Habitat ecology, and Landscape dynamics in arid and semi-arid regions of Rajasthan. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals, covering a broad range of ecological themes including Herpetofauna, avifaunal diversity, functional ecology, habitat suitability modelling, butterflies, and wetland assessment.
Currently, Dr. Sharma is associated with the Department of Zoology and the Department of Environmental Science (Centre for Excellence) at Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University, Ajmer, Rajasthan. Dr. Sharma previously worked as an Assistant Professor of Zoology (on contract) at the Regional Institute of Education (RIE), Ajmer—an institution under NCERT, Ministry of Education, Government of India—where he contributed to undergraduate teaching. His lectures emphasized both classical zoological principles and contemporary developments in life sciences. He served as a Field cum Lab Assistant in a Department of Science & Technology-sponsored project titled “Ecology and Adaptive Radiations of some Endangered Reptiles and Amphibians”. This position involved intensive field data collection, biodiversity documentation, and ecological monitoring in the diverse habitats of Rajasthan, laying a strong foundation for his future research and conservation work.
Dr. Sharma earned his Ph.D. in Zoology, for his research on “Studies of Ecobiology, Adaptive Radiation and Conservation of Amphibian Fauna of Rajasthan, Using Modern Techniques”. His work focused on the threatened amphibians of the region, integrating field ecology with technological tools to explore adaptive patterns and propose conservation strategies. He also holds an M.Sc. in Zoology with a specialization in Molecular Developmental Biology. Complementing his biological training with an interdisciplinary perspective, he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Environment and Sustainable Development from Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University, Kota, in 2014.
Over the course of his academic journey, Dr. Sharma has received multiple prestigious awards and international research grants in recognition of his scientific contributions. He was honored with the Young Ethologist Award for Best Oral Presentation at the 43rd Annual Conference of the Ethological Society of India (2020), focusing on avian ethology. In 2014, he received the Excellent Poster Award from the Japanese Society for Alternatives to Animal Experiments for his poster presentation titled “Digitization of zoology museums can reduce the number of wild animals sacrificed for teaching of biosystematics” during the 9th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences held in Prague, Czech Republic. This work reflected his advocacy for ethical education in biology and the implementation of the 3Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement) in life science teaching.
In addition, Dr. Sharma was awarded two international travel grants: one from the Alternatives Congress Trust (Germany), the SET Foundation, and the Mahatma Gandhi Doerenkamp Centre for Alternatives to Animal Use in Life Science Education to support his participation in the 9th World Congress in Prague (2014), and another for his attendance at the 8th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in Life Sciences held in Montreal, Canada (2011), organized by the Canadian Council on Animal Care.
Additionally, he is dedicated to mentoring upcoming researchers and actively engages in developing science-based conservation strategies. Dr. Sharma holds memberships in several prestigious organizations, including the Wild Life Trust of India, The National Academy of Sciences, India, the Indian Society of Cell Biology, the National Environmental Science Academy, New Delhi, and the Rajputana Society of Natural History, Rajasthan. His work continues to inspire both the scientific community and conservation efforts in India.
With a strong blend of field expertise, academic instruction, and advocacy for ethical scientific practices, Dr. Vivek Sharma continues to contribute meaningfully to the fields of zoology, environmental science, and biodiversity conservation at regional, national, and international levels.
